Brief
To lead the design, coordination and install of the 2026 Tracey Emin A Second Life Exhibition Shop for TATE Galleries. My challenge was to deliver a striking shop that visually tied in with the curation of the exhibition. It had to hold a very large product and books range, giving priority to certain hero products, whilst ensuring that the space did not restrict mobility or customer flow due to the very high predicted visitor attendance figures. Additionally, the themes of the art work were very sensitive and raw, so I was tasked with creating a space that felt calming for visitors as they exited the exhibition itself.
Research & Ideation
A shop designed to flow from the first life to the second
The final concept I pitched was to use the first section of the shop to reflect on the first half of the exhibition and Tracey’s earlier works. I took the blue from the first marketing poster designed to represent the ‘first life’ of the exhibition and then used the red that is so prevalent in her recent paintings and the second marketing poster for the ‘second life’ to outline the second space of the shop. This also meant that from the visitors perspective, the entry to the exhibition itself was painted blue to represent the beginning of the show, but if you turned to face the shop across the concourse, you would then see the vibrant red at the exit of the show, keeping in theme across all visual outputs as the representative colour of the ‘second life’.
